What to Pray When You Don’t Know What to Say
By The Bil Cornelius Team

Starting a prayer can be hard sometimes. What do you say? What should you pray about? You just… talk to God? Does it have to be clean and precise? Maybe your life is going great, and you don't know what you should say. Maybe everything that could go wrong is going wrong in your life, and you don't even know where to start. I want to teach you how to pray when you don't know what to say.

The disciples had these questions as well and asked Jesus how to pray. In Luke 11, they said, "Lord teach us how to pray," and He taught them the Lord's prayer. There’s a lot to remember, so I want to give you a funny acronym to help you memorize it. The acronym is this: TACOS.

  • ‘T’ stands for thanks. Just thank God for who He is, what He's done in your life, and what He plans to do in your future. When you reflect on your life, you might find that there’s a lot to be thankful for.
  • ‘A’ stands for adoration. This is when you worship Him and adore Him for who He is. This can look like different things, from listening to a worship song to being in awe of all of Earth’s beauty. He’s a big God, and He’s created glorious things.
  • ‘C’ is where you confess your sins to God. We aren’t perfect; all of us struggle with sin. Apologize for the mess-ups in your life, and He always forgives us.
  • ‘O’ is for praying for others. Maybe you have a concern for someone you love or care for; you should lift them up in prayer! If no one comes to mind, text a friend today and ask them if they have any prayer requests. Let them know you’re thinking about them, and you want to lift them up.
  • Lastly, ‘S’ is for self. It's okay to ask God for things that you need. He loves you, and He wants to answer your prayers. It’s okay to ask God for things you need, things you want, direction in your life, and blessings for your future.

How do you pray when you don't know what to say? Always remember TACOS. Thank Him. Adore Him. Confess to Him. Pray for others. And pray for yourself.
